About Indonesia - Land of Islands - Land
of Diversity .....
Indonesia is a land of
islands. The country consists of over 13,000 islands with over half of
them uninhabited and many under water at high tide. The size and
diversity of Indonesia is what makes it very fascinating. Contrasts
abound, both geographically and culturally. Indonesia is home to the
largest population of the Muslim religion in the world. In a land of
islands that form a bridge between Asia and Australia, modern cities and rural
villages reveal their contrasts from the hectic capital of Jakarta to Medan on
Sumatra, Bandung, Surabaya and Solo on Java, the island of Bali, and the jungles
of Borneo. Island beaches are sheltered by coconut trees and calm
waters. In the rural areas, monkeys fleet from tree to
tree.
Because of its fertile land, the largest island of Java has
supported some of Indonesia's greatest kingdoms. Over 50% of Indonesia's
people live on Java. Jakarta is home to over 15 million people.
Within a three-hour ride departing the Gambir train station in Jakarta, one can
travel slowly through the highlands to Bandung and see many tea plantations,
elegant terraced rice fields, mountains, and smiling and happy children running
from their friendly, modest houses to greet the train as it passes
by.
Central Java allows one to explore some of the greatest
architectural wonders of the 9th century Buddhis Borobudur and Hindu Prambana
temples. The Yogyakarta and Solo regions are rich in culture and
Indonesian crafts.
The famous tropical island of Bali hosts distinctive
architecture and holy mountains, gentle beaches and sophisicated hotels.
This magical island is home to a proud Balinese people whose religion is a
unique form of Hinduism blended with Buddhism and animism.
Throughout
Indonesia, one can find Balinese, Hindus, Sasak Muslims, the Bugis, Dayaks on
the island of Borneo, and the Minangkaban living in their distinctive houses
with buffalo-horn-shaped roofs. There are over 300 languages and dialects
spoken, with Bahasa Indonesia acting as the glue to tie all of the diverse words
together.
The Indonesian motto 'Unity in Diversity' reflects the proud
individualism of the many ethnic groups.
Indonesia
is truly the Land of Islands and the Land of
Diversity.
